MARCELO RAUL ÁLVAREZ
BORN ON THE 27TH FEBRUARY 1962 IN CÓRDOBA, ARGENTINA, IS TODAY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LYRIC TENOR ON INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.
AT THE AGE OF FIVE, HE IS ENROLLED IN THE ESCUOLA DE NIÑOS CANTORES DE CÓRDOBA, WHERE HE STUDIES MUSIC UNTIL HE IS SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD WHEN HE RECEIVES BOTH A DIPLOMA OF CHOIR PREPARER AND MUSIC PROFESSOR. AT THE END OF THIS COURSE OF STUDY AND DESPITE HIS MUSICAL BACKGROUND, HE NOT ONLY ASSUMES THE CHARGE OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE FURNITURE COMPANY OF THE FAMILY IN CÓRDOBA BUT ALSO STARTS UNIVERSITY STUDIES AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS.
FOR YEARS HE HAS COMPLETELY ABANDONED HIS MUSICAL STUDIES EVEN THOUGH HIS PASSION FOR SINGING REMAINS ALIVE IN HIM. AS A MATTER OF FACTS, AT THE AGE OF THIRTY, AFTER A LOT OF PERFORMANCES OF POPULAR MUSIC IN THE BARS AND KARAOKE IN HIS FREE TIME, IT GROWS IN HIM THE DESIRE TO SING. NOT KNOWING IN WHICH STYLE TO TRY, HIS WIFE SUGGESTS HIM TO UNDERTAKE THE STUDY OF LYRICAL SINGING.
HE MAKES AN AUDITION WITH MAESTRO LIBORIO SIMONELLA WHO, AFTER LISTENED HIM, ADVISES HIM TO UNDERTAKE THE STUDY OF SINGING IN HIS CÓRDOBA.
AT THAT TIME HIS KNOWLEDGE OF OPERA IS RATHER POOR BUT IN 1992 HE STARTS SINGING LESSONS WITH PROF. NORMA RISSO. AFTER A YEAR OF STUDY, ÁLVAREZ GOES BACK TO MAESTRO SIMONELLA WHO, AFTER LISTENING TO HIM AGAIN AND SEEING THE IMPROVEMENTS ACHIEVED, DECIDES TO TAKE HIM AS A PUPIL. THIS MEANS TRAVELLING EVERY WEEK FROM CÓRDOBA TO BUENOS AIRES TO FOLLOW THE LESSONS OF MAESTRO LIBORIO SIMONELLA. IT IS A 12 HOUR BUS JOURNEY FOR THE ONE WAY AND THE SAME FOR THE RETURN BUT, HIS STRONG DETERMINATION ALLOWS HIM TO PURSUE HIS GOAL. IN THIS PERIOD THE GOLDVAITZ FAMILY HELPS HIM ECONOMICALLY TO ALLOW HIM TO PAY FOR THE VERY EXPENSIVE LESSONS AND THE EGEA FAMILY HELPS HIM FOR THE JOURNEYS. IN THE MEANWHILE, ÁLVAREZ STARTS STUDYING REPERTOIRE WITH MAESTRO HORACIO ROGNER.
MAESTRO SIMONELLA IS SO FAVOURABLY IMPRESSED BY THE TALENT OF HIS PUPIL TO PREDICT THAT, WITHIN FOUR YEARS, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SING WORLD-WIDE. HE BEGINS THEREFORE TO TAKE PART IN SEVERAL AUDITIONS AT THE TEATRO COLON IN BUENOS AIRES EVEN THOUGH, AT THE VERY BEGINNING, HE DOES NOT GET THE HOPED SUCCESS.
DURING THIS PERIOD, ALVAREZ PERFORMS IN SEVERAL THEATRES IN ARGENTINA: HIS FIRST ROLE IS THE "CONTE D'ALMAVIVA" IN "IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA" BY ROSSINI, IN CORDOBA, IN JUNE OF 1994.
AFTER THAT HE SINGS IN " LUISA FERNANDA" BY FEDERICO MORENO TORROBA WITH ISMAEL PONS AT TEATRO AVENIDA IN BUENOS AIRES; IN DECEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR, IN "ELISIR D’AMORE" AT TEATRO ROMA IN AVELLANEDA, IN THE PROVINCE OF BUENOS AIRES.
IN DECEMBER 1994 THE LEGENDARY TENOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO IS INVITED TO MAKE A MASTERCLASS BY THE "COLLEGIO NACIONAL DE BUENOS AIRES", AND AT THE SAME TIME, TO LISTEN TO THE NEW PROMISES OF PROFESSIONAL SINGERS OF TEATRO COLÓN THE DIRECTOR OF WHICH, DOTT. HORACIO SANGUINETTI CONVINCED OF THE TALENT OF ÁLVAREZ SUCCEEDS IN PUTTING HIM IN THE LIST OF CANDIDATES. THANKS TO THIS LUCKY COINCIDENCE, DI STEFANO, AFTER LISTENING TO ÁLVAREZ AND TALKING TO THE AUDIENCE PRESENT AT THE THEATRE SAYS: "YOU HAVE GOOD INSTINCTS, YOU REMIND ME WHEN I WAS YOUNG" AND TURNING TO THE AUDITORIUM ADDS: "THIS MAN SINGS WITH HEART, HE WILL HAVE A GREAT CAREER". IN THE EIGHTIES AND NINETIES MAESTRO LUCIANO PAVAROTTI USED TO ORGANIZE PERIODICALLY WORLD-WIDE AUDITIONS IN OCCASION OF HIS “PAVAROTTI INTERNATIONAL VOICE COMPETITION”. WHEN PAVAROTTI ARRIVES IN BUENOS AIRES AND LISTEN TO THE AUDITION OF ÁLVAREZ IN FEBRUARY 1995, HE IMMEDIATELY INVITES HIM TO GO TO PHILADELPHIA (USA) THE FOLLOWING YEAR WHERE THE LAST PHASE OF HIS COMPETITION TAKES PLACE.
BESIDES PAVAROTTI'S INVITATION, ÁLVAREZ RECEIVES ANOTHER ONE FROM ISMAEL PONS TO SING THE OPERA “MARINA” IN MINORCA (SPAIN) ORGANIZED FOR THE SPANISH BARITONE JUAN PONS. THESE FIRST PERFORMANCES ALLOW ÁLVAREZ TO WORK ON HIS VOICE AND TO IMPROVE HIS ACTOR TALENT. THANKS TO THE TRUST OBTAINED THROUGH THESE FIRST EXPERIENCES AND BOTH DI STEFANO AND PAVAROTTI'S ENCOURAGEMENT, ÁLVAREZ AND HIS WIFE DECIDE TO SELL EVERYTHING THEY POSSESS AND TO MOVE TO EUROPE TO LET ÁLVAREZ'S CHANCES TO GO ON WITH HIS CAREER AS AN OPERA SINGER INCREASE. IN THE
MEANWHILE, ÁLVAREZ STARTS TAKING LESSONS WITH MAESTRO RENATO SASSOLA.
IN 1995 ÁLVAREZ ARRIVES IN EUROPE AND IS IMMEDIATELY INVOLVED IN A LOT OF ACTIVITIES, STARTING WITH THE OPERA “MARINA” IN SPAIN. IN JULY HE MOVES TO MILAND AND ONLY SEVEN DAYS AFTER HIS ARRIVAL IN ITALY, ÁLVAREZ WINS A SINGING COMPETITION IN PAVIA. WITHIN ONE MONTH HE STIPULATES SEVERAL CONTRACTS WITH TEATRO LA FENICE IN VENICE WHERE HE IS LISTENED BY MAESTRO FRANCESCO SICILIANI, AND WITH TEATRO CARLO FELICE IN GENOA WHERE HE MAKES AN AUDITION WITH THE GREAT CONDUCTOR GIANANDREA GAVAZZENI. BOTH GAVAZZENI AND SICILIANI IMMEDIATELY CONTRACT ÁLVAREZ WHOSE DEBUT IN LA FENICE IN VENICE TAKES PLACE IN SEPTEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR. IN THAT OCCASION, MAESTRO SICILIANI OFFERS ÁLVAREZ TO CHOOSE THE ROLE FOR HIS DEBUT AND HE DECIDES FOR THE DIFFICULT CHARACTER OF ELVINO IN “LA SONNAMBULA” BY BELLINI.
IN NOVEMBER 1995 IN GENOA ÁLVAREZ SWITCHES TO THE FIRST COMPANY AND HAS TO SING THE PART OF ALFREDO IN “LA TRAVIATA” BY VERDI. HE SINGS THIS ROLE TOGETHER WITH ONE OF THE BEST ITALIAN SOPRANO, MARIELLA DEVIA WHO SINGS THE ROLE OF VIOLETTA IN THE SAME PRODUCTION FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT IS DEVIA HERSELF WHO WANTS ÁLVAREZ AS A SINGING PARTNER DESPITE HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE ON THE STAGE AT FIRST INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.
AFTER THIS PERFORMANCE, WHICH IS ACCLAIMED BY THE CRITICS, ÁLVAREZ SINGS THE ROLE OF ALFREDO IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS IN THEATRES ALL OVER THE WORLD, FROM HAMBURG TO LONDON, FROM THE MET TO LA SCALA AND FROM TOKYO TO WIEN. HE IS ALSO APPROACHED BY EUROPEAN THEATRES TO SING NEW ROLES AMONG WHICH 2LA FILLE DU REGIMENT” IN BILBAO, “DER ROSENKAVALIER” IN GENOA, “RIGOLETTO” IN TRIEST: ALL THESE PERFORMANCES TAKE PLACE IN 1996.
IN 1997 HE SINGS IN “I PURITANI”, “WERTHER”, “MANON”, “LINDA DI CHAMOUNIX” AND “LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR”.
AS A RESULT OF HIS GROWING POPULARITY AND ENTHUSIASTIC APPRECIATION BY PUBLIC OPINION SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING OF HIS CAREER ÁLVAREZ STARTS SINGING ON SEVERAL OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS STAGES WORLD-WIDE. HE MAKES HIS DEBUT IN A VERY DEMANDING SERIES OF NEW ROLES IN ITALIAN BEL CANTO AND IN FRENCH OPERAS.
HE SINGS TEN ROLES IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF HIS CAREER; THIS MARKS HIS QUICK RISING ONTO THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE. HE CONFIRMS HIS REPUTATION IN LYRIC ROLES SUCH AS DUCA DI MANTOVA IN “RIGOLETTO”, ALFREDO IN “LA TRAVIATA”, WITH 150 PERFORMANCES IN BOTH OF THE OPERAS, “LA FILLE DU REGIMENT”, “DER ROSENKAVALIER”, AND EDGARDO IN “LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR”.
IN FEBRUARY OF 1997 MARCELO SINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN “I PURITANI” BY BELLINI SINGING THE ROLE OF ARTURO AT THE TEATRO COMUNALE DI BOLOGNA. IN SPRING OF THE SAME YEAR HE REPLACES ALFREDO KRAUS IN "WERTHER" BY MASSENET AT TEATRO CARLO FENICE IN GENOA. THE ITALIAN PRESS SHOWS THE APPROVAL FOR THE NATURAL TALENTS OF THE NEW TENOR. ÁLVAREZ ATTRACTS ALSO THE ATTENTION OF THE RECORD LABEL SONY CLASSICAL AFTER HIS PERFORMANCE OF “RIGOLETTO” IN TOULOUSE AND WITH IT HE SIGNS AN EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT PRODUCING SIX CD’S IN THE SPACE OF SIX YEARS.
SINCE 1997, FOR THREE YEARS ALONG, MULTIPLE PRODUCTIONS FOLLOW ONE ANOTHER OF THE OPERA “RIGOLETTO” IN TRIEST, TOULOUSE, VERONA, BUENOS AIRES, NEW YORK AND PARIS (THE EXHIBITION OF JUNE 1999 AT THEATRE ROYAL DE LA MONNAIE IS BROADCAST LIVE ON TELEVISION ALL OVER EUROPE).
IN 1997, THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE IN LINDON, TEMPORARILY UNFIT BECAUSE OF RENOVATIONS, SEES TRANSFERRING ITS PERFORMANCES TO THE ROYA FESTIVAL HALL WHERE, IN NOVEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR, ALVAREZ DEBUTS IN CONCERT WITH “LINDA DI CHAMOUNIX” BY DONIZETTI.
IN 1998 HE SINGS “LA TRAVIATA” AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL AND HE PERFORMS IN THE SAME PRODUCTION IN TOURNEE AT THE COVENT GARDEN, IN BADEN BADEN, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF PLACIDO DOMINGO.
HIS REAL DEBUT AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE IN LONDON TAKES PLACE IN SEPTEMBER 2000 WITH “I RACCONTI DI HOFFMANN” BY OFFENBACH. ÁLVAREZ FREQUENTLY PERFORMS IN LONDON AND OFTEN EMPHASIZES THAT THIS CITY OCCUPIES A SPECIAL PLACE IN HIS HEART BECAUSE "IT'S THE FIRST PLACE WHERE I HEARD THE PUBLIC SHOUT MY NAME"
IN 1998 ÁLVAREZ DEBUTS AT THE TEATRO ALLA SCALA IN MILAN IN A PRODUCTION OF “LINDA DI CAMOUNIX”, AND AT THE END OF THE SAME YEAR HE SINGS AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE IN NEW YORK IN FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI'S NEW PRODUCTION OF LA TRAVIATA CONDUCTED BY JAMES LEVINE; IN THE SAME OPERA HE PERFORMS THEN AT THE ROMAN THEATER IN ORANGE, FRANCE, IN VIENNA, IN PARIS AND AT THE DEUTSCHE OPER IN BERLIN.
IN AUTUMN 1998 HIS FIRST CD AS A SOLO SINGER COMES OUT: ITS TITLE IS “BEL CANTO” AND IT IS DISTRIBUTED BY SONY CLASSICS. THREE OTHER ONES FOLLOW: "MARCELO ÁLVAREZ SINGS GARDEL" DEDICATED TO THE ARGENTINIAN TANGO OF CARLOS GARDEL, "FRENCH OPERA ARIAS" AND "THE TENOR'S PASSION", A COLLECTION OF THE MOST POPULAR OPERA ARIAS. MOREOVER, ÁLVAREZ HAS PUBLISHED A COMPLETE ALBUM OF THE OPERA "MANON" TOGETHER WITH RENEE FLEMING, LIVE RECORDING BY THE “L’OPERA DE LA BASTILLE” IN PARIS. THIS CD OFFERS TO THE MODERN AUDIENCE A REPRODUCTION OF THE MOST FAMOUS TANGOS, HONORING THE SPIRIT AND STYLE OF THE LEGENDARY "TANGUERO" CARLOS GARDEL. IN JUNE 2003, ÁLVAREZ AND THE ITALIAN TENOR SALVATORE LICITRA RECORD "DUETTO", AN ALBUM OF ROMANTIC BALLADS based on OPERA "ARIAS" AND OTHER CLASSICAL MELODIES: FROM A SELECTION OF THE CONTENTS OF "DUETTO", A CONCERT AT THE COLOSSEO IN ROME IS ORGANIZED. THIS CONCERT IS BROADCAST ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES BY PUBLIC TV PBS; LATER ON, IN SUMMER, ÁLVAREZ PERFORMS IN ANOTHER CONCERT IN NEW YORK AT THE CENTRAL PARK FOR AN AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 50.000 PEOPLE.

GOING ON WITH HIS WAY TO THE NEW REPERTOIRE, IN 2006 HE DEBUTS IN THE ROLE OF MANRICO IN “IL TROVATORE” BY VERDI IN PARMA WHICH IS A PLACE WELL-KNOWN FOR THE CRITICISM DIRECTED TO TENORS.

THE FIRST PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN BROADCAST FREE OF CHARGE ON A VERY BIG SCREEN OUTDOORS IN LINCOLN CENTER’S JOSIE ROBERTSON PLAZA FOR AN AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 3.000 PEOPLE, AND ON MORE THAN ONE SCREEN AT TIMES SQUARE, NEW YORK, FOR MORE THAN 2.000 PEOPLE. IN OCTOBER THE NEXT PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN BROADCAST AS A PART OF THE SERIES OF THE MET HD, DISTRIBUTED ALL OVER THE USA AND ALSO IN OTHER 44 COUNTRIES, REACHING AN AUDIENCE OF 300.000 PEOPLE.
IN DECEMBER 2009 HE DEBUTS IN "ANDREA CHENIER" AT THE OPERA DE LA BASTILLE IN PARIS, IN A NEW PRODUCTION BY GIANCARLO DEL MONACO.
IN THE SEASON 2010-2011 HE IS AGAIN COMMITTED IN A PRODUCTION OF “TOSCA” AT THE OPERNHAUS IN ZURIGO AND OF “IL TROVATORE” AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE IN NEW YORK: A DVD OF THIS PRODUCTION TOGETHER WITH SONDRA RADVANOVSKY AND DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY IS PRODUCED.
IN APRIL 2010 HE DEBUTS AT THE COVENT GARDEN IN LONDON THE ROLE OF RADAMES IN “AIDA” BY VERDI.
IN SUMMER 2011 AT THE PALAU REINA SOFIA IN VALENCIA HE GIVES LIFE TO “TOSCA” IN THE "FESTIVAL MEDITERRANEO". IN JANUARY 2012 HE DEBUTS IN A NEW PRODUCTION OF “AIDA” AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MARCO ARMILIATO. LATER ON, THE PERFORMANCES OF “TOSCA” AND “LUISA MILLER” AT THE TEATRO ALLA SCALA AND “CARMEN” AT THE ARENA ARE TO BE PUT IN EVIDENCE.
HE RETURNS AGAIN AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE FOR A NEW PRODUCTION, MADE ALSO FOR THE CINEMA, OF "BALLO IN MASCHERA " UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MAESTRO F. LUISI.

IN 2013, HE SINGS IN “UN BALLO IN MASCHERA” AT TEATRO ALLA SCALA IN MILAN; IN SEPTEMBER AT THE STAASOPER IN WIEN IN “TOSCA” AND LATER ON IN “AIDA” AT THE OPERA NATIONAL DE PARIS.

2018 BEGINS WITH A RECITAL AT THE GSTAAD WINTER FESTIVAL, SWITZERLANS’S ACCLAIMED FESTIVAL, ACCOMPANIED BY MAESTRO KAMAL KHAN. THEN FOLLOWED THE “TURANDOT” AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE, “IL TROVATORE” AT THE OPERA NATIONAL DE PARIS, “CARMEN” AT THE STAATSOPER IN WIEN AND “TOSCA” AT THE DEUTSCHE OPER IN BERLIN. HE RETURNS TO LJUBLJANA WITH A CONCERT AT THE REQUEST OF THE SLOVENIAN PUBLIC AND CONCLUDES THE YEAR WITH HIS DEBUT IN “IL TABARRO” BY PUCCINI IN PUCCINI’S TRIPTYCH AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE IN NEW YORK.
HE OPENS 2019 WITH A CONCERT TOUR IN JAPAN AND LATER IN SEOUL WHICH SEES HIM PERFORMING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SOUTH KOREA ENJOYING GREAT SUCCESS AND APPROVAL BY THE SOUTH KOREAN PUBLIC. IN APRIL HE RETURNS TO THE TEATRO ALLA SCALA WITH THE “MANON LEASCAUT” UNDER THE CONDUCTION OF MAESTRO RICCARDO CHAILLY. LATER ON THIS YEAR, HE SINGS “CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA” BY MASCAGNI AT THE TEATRO SAN CARLO IN NAPLES, PARTICIPATES AT THE BUDAPEST SUMMER FESTIVAL IN THE ROLE OF CANIO IN LEONCAVALLO’S “PAGLIACCI” AND GSTAAD FESTIVAL IN THE ROLE OF DON JOSE IN “CARMEN” BY BIZET. IN THE AUTUMN OF 2019 HE PERFORMS IN PUCCINI’S “TOSCA” AT THE TEATRO REGIO IN TURIN, AND MAKES A 4 DAY MASTERCLASS AT THE ACCADEMIA DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA. HE CONCLUDES THIS YEAR WITH LEONCAVALLO’S “PAGLIACCI” AT THE GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU IN BARCELONA.
IN 2020 HE RETURNS TO GENOA WITH THE “ADRIANA LECOUVREUR” AT THE TEATRO CARLO FELICE WITH THE SOPRANO BARBARA FRITTOLI IN THE ROLE OF ADRIANA. BY GREAT REQUEST AFTER THE PREVIOUS YEAR’S MASTERCLASS HE RETURNS FOR THE SECOND TIME WITH A 4 DAY MASTERCLASS AT THE ACCADEMIA ALLA SCALA.
EVEN IF ÁLVAREZ STARTED PROFESSIONALLY WITH THE LYRIC SINGING ONLY RATHER LATE IN HIS LIFE, HE HAS BEEN ABLE TO DEVELOP HIS ARTISTIC CAREER VERY CAREFULLY WHETHER IN RELATION TO THE TYPOLOGIES OF THE ROLE PERFORMED AS WELL IN RELATION TO THE PROGRESSION OF STYLES.
