About Prof. Christoph Poppen
Christoph Poppen is one of the most versatile artists of his generation. After he had won numerous awards as a violinist in his early years and having performed for 20 years as first violinist of Cherubini-Quartet, he started to conduct. As Artistic Director he gave a new profile to Munich Chamber Orchestra, and as the Founding Conductor he led the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra into a new era. Today he is Music Director of Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Principal Conductor of Cologne Chamber Orchestra, also performing as guest conductor with many other orchestras worldwide.
At the same time, he was always active as a violin and chamber music pedagogue, and many well-known artists like Isabelle Faust, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Clara Jumi Kang, or Novus-Quartet belong to his former students. He was President of the School of Music Hanns Eisler in Berlin 1996 - 2000 and served as Artistic Director of the International Music Competition of the ARD from 2000 to 2005. 2003 - 2023, he was teaching as professor for violin and chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich and since 2021 he is working as a violin professor at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid.
2013 he founded FIMM, Festival Internacional de Música de Marvão/Portugal and 2018 MIAMAS, Marvão International Academy for Music Arts and Science, where he is regularly giving masterclasses, as well as in many other parts of the world.
