About Peter Gijsbertsen

A 2018 recipient of the highest award in Dutch classical music, the Nederlandse Muziekprijs, Peter is regarded as one of the finest musicians in The Netherlands. He was also the recipient of the John Christie Award (Glyndebourne Festival Opera) and a triple prize winner at the Den Bosch International Vocalists Competition.

His operatic repertoire includes the roles of Don José in Bizet’s Carmen (Longborough Festival Opera), Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and Gonzalve in Ravel’s L’heure Espagnole (Opera Zuid), Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata (Scottish Opera, Longborough Festival Opera), Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Scottish Opera, Nouvel Opéra Fribourg, Opera Zuid), The Novice in Britten’s Billy Budd (Bolshoi Theatre, Glyndebourne and BAM New York), Janiček in Diary of one who disappeared by Janáček (Opéra de Lyon/Muziektheater Transparant) and Acis in Händel’s Acis and Galatea (Dorset Opera Festival, Nouvel Opéra Fribourg).

On the concert platform, Peter has worked will all the major orchestras in Holland like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (St. Matthew Passion by Bach released on DVD with Art House), as well as with orchestras abroad like the NDR Symfony orchestra Hamburg (Kammermusik 1958 van H.W. Henze, released on CD with Wergo) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

Peter has recorded multiple CD’s with labels Phaedra and MDG amongst which are full recitals of Strauss, Schubert, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Duparc, Mortelmans, and Van Hoof songs. He has been on the jury for the first round of the IVC Song competition and was invited as a master at the Udo Reinemann International Masterclasses alongside Christianne Stotijn.

Future engagements include Die Schöpfung by Haydn (Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra), Lied von der Erde by Mahler (Flemish Symphony Orchestra),  the title role in Orfeo by Monteverdi (Longborough Festival Opera), and Janiček in Diary of one who disappeared by Janáček (Muziektheater Transparant) as well as a recording of the Spanisches Liederbuch by Wolf.
